SOME PEOPLE SAY USE SOAP & WATER & SOME SAY USE SOLVENT , WHAT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE IS SOME SAY TO PUT OIL ON THEM AFTER , I THOUGHT THAT WAS A NO NO ON THEM BECAUSE IT MAKES THEM LOAD HARD , ALSO SOME SAY TO SEASON THE BARREL AND THAT SOLVENT TAKES THE SEASONING OUT , I AM FAIRLY NEW TO BP GUNS & THIS IS AS CLEAR AS MUD TO ME ? I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW YOUR INPUT, I AM SURE I WILL GET BOTH SIDES OF THE STORY BUT THIS WAY I CAN FIGURE OUT MY OWN WAY FROM YOUR INPUT.

First off loose the caps it does no good. Second it does make cence to use good oil after cleaning just remove it before the next time you shoot with a couple of alchohol patches. The more you shoot the more you will perfect your methodes.

This looks like the same old arguement between bore butter shooters and those who oil their barrels. Its all a matter of personal preference. Use what you trust. I personally oil the bore and then before I load to shoot, take a patch, put some alcohol on it and swab the oil out of the bore. Pop a couple caps to clear the ignition system, and I am good to go.

I use Rusty Duck from Walmart to clean the barrel. I brush it out with a brass brush after a few dry pathes. I use alchol to clean the breach plug, just in case I don't dry it properly---it will shoot. I alway field clearn after each shot, 2 bore butter patches, light buttered, up and down twice, turn over patch and do again up and down twice. So effectively 8x up and down, with 2 pathes. The 1st patch is pretty dirty, the 2nd patch is relatively clean. Soap I have done this,messy and I have a scope so not so easy. Windshield washer fluid, I have used that, works. Idon't like it as much as rusty Duck, since duck seems to cut fouling better.

My gun rusts without oil. I swab out the barrel before shooting it and it's no problem. Furthermore, both soap and water and solvent will work great for cleaning it. I used only soap and water with my old open breech and it worked great. With my new closed breech,Idecided to use solvent and I much prefer it.

Cleaning the gun is very simple. You simply take out the breech plug, clean the bore and the bp threads, clean the breech plug/nipple well and then put anti seize grease on it, wipe any crud off of your guns surface, and oil the gun and reassemble. It's really not complicated. The only thing that makes it that way is that there's so many ways to clean it. Just start cleaning and you'll figure out what's easiest and best.

The owners manuals do have great info on that subject. I suggest you just follow their guidelines. Hope I helped in the least bit.
