Default Anyone ever use Hornady .452 230 gr. LRN?

Was curious if anyone has used the Hornady .452 230 gr. LRN with sabot? Its an unjacketed, 15 hardness, roundnose bullet. Has a very good BC for its weight, .207. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Happy Hunting, Phil

I tried various lead .45 pistol bullets - 230 grain, 255 Keith Style - with sabots in the past. Never got great accuracy out of them, but it wasn't too bad. Seems like the key is get the base of the bullet to match up well with the shape of the sabot's internal base - and to not try to drive them too hard.

I do with my system one[1-38 twist] both the lead andXTP 230 gr X .451give good results, good groups and a hit right over or in the top of the heart will usually drop a deer on the spot[ three pellets X 50gr]. Lee

Thanks Lee and Roskoe.I still haven't determined if the 295 PB's (my nephew's load) are going to group well beyond 50 yards on the light charge (65 grains RS). At 50 yards, they were grouping 1 3/4 to 2" while 245 ballets were grouping 1" to 1 1/4. I don't know if it wasme, the range conditions, or the PBs, and I don't know if the PB's will really widen further out. When I get the Sidekick back, I have considered trying the 230 grain LRN's, if the PB's fail to group at 75-80 yards less than 3" spread. The 245 grain Ballets average 1600 fps on 65 grains RS. I thought, figuring the weight of the sabot, I may get a similar velocity with the 230 LRN.

It's a pretty light load, but I plan to spend a lot of time with him at the range, he is young, never actually fired a rifle before, so I don't want to punish him with a heavy load. For $13 a box of 200, we could do alot of practice for not too much cost. And, owing to better BC, should actually deliver a little more energyat 100 yards than the295PB.

Would the Harvester .452 sabot work with them?

Happy Hunting, Phil

Pglasgow

I am jumping here without reading all the information, but if you are looking for a light recoiling load but yet still quite effective out to a 100, might look a at 10mm 200 grain XTP. Just the weight of the projectile will reduce some of the recoil.

Sabotloader, I think thats the best suggestion I have heard so far, I am going to use bonded blue tip 250 sabots on my up coming boar hunt but if I get one I think I will prop him back up and use one of the 50/40 200gr so I can look at what they do,because they shoot with a wide range of loads with good groups.
