During muzzleloader season I take a .54 caliber or .58 caliber and shoot roundball. This year I might give my .50 caliber flintlock a try, maybe even my .62 caliber smoothbore. We are not allowed scopes with any magnification. Roundball just plain knocks them down and keeps them there. During the modern season I hunt with inlines. I just mounted a Sightron Scope on my Wolverine last night and was shooting it today... Awesome !!

I want to hunt some fields this year and was thinking that the Knight with the right projectile might do the trick out to 125 yards for me. After that in the fields it gets spotty at best to see one because of the under growth.

What if I shoot 110 grainsinstead of130 grains? More accurate at longer distances?

Only your rifle will be able to answer that. Try it both ways and see what shoots the best, then adjust the sights accordingly.

Retrieverman - I tried to calculate the BC of the 250 Barnes Expander MZ a couple of years ago - working backwards through the formula - came up with .180.

Thanks Roskoe for the reply. After I asked the question, I thoughtabout going to the Barnes site. They claim .189 for the 250 gr Expander.I have been reading theother posts on shooting 200yards. I have only shot SST's out to 100 which shoot pretty close to 250 gr Expanders. I know for a fact that250 gr Expanders drop 13"+/- at 200 when sighted in dead on at 100. Will a .021 higher bc makea 4-5"difference in bullet drop at 200?

I doubt it. In my Black Diamond, with three 50 gr. Pyrodex pellets and at 8,000 feet in elevation, three inches high at 100 yards only put me 3" low at 200 yards with the 250 Expander MZ. I think the 250 Shockwave shoots a couple of inches higher at 200 yards with the same load, and isgoing about 150 fps faster - although I am currently loading it with 130 grains of Pellets.

Man, I am not even close to that kind of trajectory, of course, I am in eastern Texas and barely above sea level if that makes any difference. What kind of primers are you using? I have always used Win 209's andam shooting 130 gr Pyrodex pellets also. What am I doing wrong?

Well, the elevationmakes a difference. I think the ballistic coefficient goes up about 5% for every 1,000 feet above sea level. Most likely, however, it is a scope height issue. I'm using fairly high rings so I can still leave the open sights on the gun. This can artificially flatten out the trajectory.

I use RWS musket caps. Not sure if you're doing anything "wrong". It is what it is - as long as the grouping is good, hold for whatever drop you are getting. Good luck. Roscoe

Roskoe,
Thanks again for the info. I am getting 2" and under groups at 200, so I really can't complain about that.I spent $1500 on an Ultimate Firearms BP Xpress to get better trajectory, and it has worked. With my new gun, I can sight in dead on at 100 and be 4" low at 200. That is very close to my 300 WSM trajectory. My only "problem" now is that I have shot my Knight so much that it is an extention of me, and I am not near as "comfortable" with my new gun. Which would not be a problem, but with heat indexes over 105 with no end in sight, range trips are nearly impossible. It is hard to get "comfortable" with your gun with it in the safe. If I can't get some range time soon, I will more than likely be shooting my Knight again this season.

Retrieverman doesn't that suck? I have not even shot my Encore(with the 209/.50 barrel) since last hunting season. If I had to grab a m/l right now for tomorrow it would be my Scout carbine. Funny I keep the expensive things on the shelf and look to get all I can out of the other rifles.

Don't get me wrong the Scout isn't a cheap rifle I paid over $300 for it but like you said it is part of my arm. I guess when you own and carry a rifle as long as I have the Scout it feels sooo right.

I've got to just start treating the Encore like my other guns and shoot it all the time. I shot about 100 round of .308win out of it last month but have not put the m/l barrel back on it yet.
