Default Scope - Determining Eye Relief

Perhaps someone can help - how do you measure eye relief on a scope? Is it simply a matter (with help perhaps) of measuring the distance between the end of the objective lens and your eyebrow/eye, at the point the image becomes clear? OR??
Have an older (20+ years)1 & 3/4 - 5 X Redfield (rectangular objective opening) presently on a .308, that I might think of switching to my ML.

Well, almost! The measurementis taken at the point at which you can see the full field of vision of the scope - where the image is occupying the whole surface of the ocular lens. Get close to the scope, slowly pull your head to the rear to the point where the whole field of view is visible, then have someone measure the distance from your eye to the rear surface of the ocular lens. This is the minimum figure for the eye relief. As you continue sliding your face back, you will reach a point where you begin to losethe full field of view-that's the maximum eye relief distance.
