Ant,

I suppose that we have to ponder something to get us through the winter - I wouldn't mind hitting the range and taking some data, but it would be more like a biathlon at this point.

I followed the link to your site, looks interesting - I may have to add to my library.

The two are both great calibers. It really depends on what you are comfortable with. Have you shot any of these calibers before? If so which one do you like better and can shoot more accurate with. Then go with that caliber. But if it were myself i would say the 06.

30-06 for the animals you mentioned. At short range you wont notice, any difference, but for some of the big animals you'll want the heavier bullets, the 06 is clearly better when loading the heavier bullets.

apmaurosr,a 308 shoots flatter then an 30-06 ????????????????????? Every table I look at shows the 30-06 shoots about 100 fps faster then a 308 with the same bullet. I am not saying the 308 is a bad choice but a 30-06 shoots flatter and faster.
I'll take a .308 over a .3006 any day even if the .308 is slower.

The .308 in all cases, same bullet, powder type will be roughly 100fps SLOWER than the .3006
All reloading manuals will say this too.

Thanks Jonathan K.

X-mountie - I think you'll find this debate will continue forever, if not in this forum, then on some other forum. The reason is that there is really no clear cut answer. It's a matter of preferance (but don't let the secret out).

Best regards
Ant
