the biggest rifle i have right now is a 308win what do you all think would be the best ammo for big game. intell i get the money to get a 45-70.

Interesting choice to change from a 308 to a 45/70. I see those two cartidges as being highly different for most uses. Interested to hear why the 45/70 would be an up-grade?Unless you got a bear at close range or....?

Night Hawk. I'm not sure how big the "big-game" is that you're hunting, but I used 200 gr. woodleigh partition in my 308 for african big-game (500 lb to 800 lb antelopes/zebra). They worked great even at 300 yards. The 180 grain suggestion is also very good advice. You may have to special order the 200 grain from a company like Superior Ammo.

For factory loads I like the federal premium with Nosler Balistic tips. 150 for deer and 180 for bugger critters. I also love the old 45-70.

thanks for the help! well i like to get in as close as i can. and would like to do some bear hunting some day. i have family in colorado that wants me to come and hunt elk with them. also i have my 308 set up for hunting coyotes it doesnt bother me to use a 308 for yotes because i dont do the sewing my brother does. lol i feel my 308 will handle just about any game but i want a bigger gun to get close to dangerus game like bear. when i get my 45-70 i will also take a yote with it just to mess with my brother. i can see his face now
