Side arm of choice?

RE: Side arm of choice?
Lucky for me, Virginia doesn't have many wild creatures that like to eat people. When I'm in the Piedmont region, I carry my CCW pistol, a Steyr M40 with 180 gr. Hydra-Shoks. In the mountains, I carry my grandpa's Ruger GP-100 with 158 gr. Hydra-Shoks.

I usually rely on a S&W 629 4" 44 Mag. I load it with 240 gr. jacketed hollow points for regular carry, but switch to 300 gr. hard cast bullets when black bear season is open, in case I get a shot at one. Sometimes I'll instead carry my stainless Colt Government Model 45 Auto. That would be loaded with 230 gr. Remington Golden Sabres.

Not exactly sure on what are laws are with regards to sidearms. In bowseason i carry my can of bear spray on my hip at all times. Been bowhunting only 2 years and have already used it once. Tracking is a bit of a different story, i am not about to follow a blood trail after dark without a rifle in my hand. If a sow and a few cubs happen to find that animal before you do, and you stubble across them on the kill, a bit of an ugly situation would arise. Depends where the animal is but if there are bears in the area i am packin heat when recovering that critter.

I also carry only bear spray. I feel it would do the job in about any situation. Without harming anything too seriously. As for recovering your game I carry a small bell that clips on my hat, the sound of metal on metal I've been told, should alert bear and such you are near and they will vacate.
