I actually take 3 pairs of boots if it is a drive up campsite. Lightweight pair that is not insulated. I personally use Cabelas Mountain hunter II (not the tall model, the one that comes up just above the ankle). I also take an insulated lightweight pair (Rockies with 600 grams thinsulate). I also take a pair of Sorrels with the removable wool liners for any hunts not far from the truck when I am going to be sitting a lot, or if most of my hunting will be done from a horse.

I use the noninsulated pair 80-90% of the time. Thin sock in hot weather and thicker wool sock in moderately cold weather.

Be sure and use a thin wicking sock liner under a wool or wool blend sock. Thin one helps prevent blisters and wicks the sweat away from the foot. Doesn't matter how cold the temp is, if you hike in the mountains, your feet will sweat.

If I had to choose one for that time of the year, I would choose an uninsulated or slightly insulated model. If I had to choose one for later in the year, I would choose the Rocky insulated. Sorrels are warmest, but are the worst for hiking in.

Good luck

For that area I would say a good waterproof pair of boots with atleast 600 grams of thinsulate!! Usually not to hot yet but may get a little snow or rain!!

If your going to be stationary for most of the day, most hunters are on the move all day, get some insulated boots. If you plan on doing a lot of walking get a good pair of LIGHT uninsulated or thinly insulated boots that are waterproof. I use the Danner "Pronghorn" which are the lightest/quality/high top/gore-tex boot that Cabela's carries. Buy them big enough to wear a thin under sock and a thick over sock. They offer good support in a light package. Elk hunting is hardhunting, many years of backpacking and mountain hunting has taught me the value of light weight footwear. The weight you carry, especially on you feet, can make a HUGE difference at the end of the day.

400 gram Danner Pronghorns, buy some good wool socks in case the weather turns cooler. Nice and light and durable.

I 2nd Elkcrazy8, I use those exact boots with wool socks, wouldn't trade the comfort and durability for anything. They're comftorable right out of the box! ElkNut1
