Sorry no offense but I don't buy it. I have seen them laydown (from my treestand) during bow season and a hunter walk within easy shooting distance and he never moved, just laid there and watched every move that hunter made. Where in the smart department does this fall? I am sure there are some well seasoned hunters on this page that can give examples of intelligence not instincts. Either way I love hunting them!

EKM - After prompting you also posted the survey in the deer hunter forum. Any particular reason you've chosen not to include their responses in the totals? Those responses are a lot more evenly split. Some chose the novelty of an animal that they don't have an opportunity to hunt, others prefer to perfect their craft on their favorite game.

No offense taken Outdoor. The only reason I posted about what I heard about whitetails is because I've heard for years how smart whitetail are. Then on not one but two shows on the outdoor channel they stated that whitetails are in fact not smart. They are very elusive because thier smelling ability is superior to nearly all big game, also heard that on the outdoor channel. I was very interested in what I heard and just thought I'd pass it along and kick the ball around with ya. I would love to chase em one day though, seems like great huntin.

Cal,

Sorry, missed it. Hadn't been over to this one for a while.

No real reason. I posted it over there in response to someone's suggestion. Generally I don't stray much beyond big game and guns. Feel free to count them up, apply your knowledge and experience and enlighten us as to the meaning. It's a free country.

Good Luck and Good Hunting,
EKM

I ve hunted Elk, Mulies & Whitetails with bow rifle and shotgun in IL,IOWA,CO,WY,MO,AR, and it is in my opion that an 31/2 year old or older whitetail buck is the king of wits one hint your hunting him hes gone. My opion is elk country is the hardest thing to hunt when it comes to hunting elk. Dont get me wrong an elk is like a whitetail but with a bigger nose. I just think a whitetail has a slight advantage. If you would put whitetails in black timber at higher altitude you would hardly see one .

Your right about that. Whitetails spend their whole life in a small area. Sooner or later with enough patience even that big ole monster deer will mess up and get shot. Put whitetails in elk country and with elks free ranging habits and trophy whitetail would become the ultimate trophy sought after.

Alot of people think timberline mulie bucks are tremendously hard to get upon. Its a matter of knowing the species. A huge timberline buck will seldom be by himself. He'll have a bunch of smaller bucks with him. And if you've ever watched a big buck in a group he's the one getting all the rest. Those little bucks get up and move around all the time. Kinda like their posting guard over the big one. You don't have to sneak on the big buck but you will have to sneak on the smaller bucks. I'm fasinated by the big bucks thought process of letting the little ones take the first bullet. Alot of times hunters will shoot a medium buck and watch a big buck get up and walk off while they kick themselves for lack of patience.

All animals have their few things that make getting a trophy just alittle harder. But I think elk all around as a herd are one of the most aware creatures out there. Individually they are very vunerable.
