Elk Hunt Location
Does anyone have any ideas for an area we could buy an over the counter archery elk tag. We may not get drawn and are looking for other options. We don't need an area where we will see huge bulls, just want to get into some heards and see some elk.
thanks

Idaho offers over the counter elk tags. The panhandle region always has tags left over just before the start of the season. You can find tons of public land up the Coeur d' Alene River. This area is 1-hour east of the Spokane International airport, just off Interstate-90.
Hope this helps.

Montana district 410 offers unlimited archery tags, but you still need to apply for them. You need to have a general license first, which you must apply for. There are alot of elk in this area, and there is a fair amount of public land in the northern part of the district in the Charles Russel Refuge area.

Rangerlab is right Montana's unit 410 does have some elk on private land. The unlimited permit is for archery hunting only. You must apply for your license by March-15th. Then you must apply for your special permit by june 2nd. If you draw your elk license? There are no over the counter elk tags in the state of Montana.
If you are looking for an over the counter tag after your draw results come out? Look at Colorado & Idaho.

The only over the counter elk tags that I know of here in Montana are the surplus of left over tags that are avaliable after the special drawings have been made, any left over tags after the drawing will be on a first come first serve basis, but in order to get these you gotta be lucky enough to get drawn for a license if your a non-resident. If you want to hunt here, a outfitter may be your best bet but you better hurry as time is running out.
I think some over the counter tags can be bought in Idaho, maybe you can shoot elknut an e-mail and he should be able to let you know about the availibity of tags there, I'm not really too sure myself, sometimes the best thing to do is go to the states homepage for the right imformation regarding licenses and tags and if you still can't find it, there is always a phone number avaliable. Good luck, Bobby
