A book that I just read, It says that the polar bear is the largest carnivore alive in the world today.

I dont doubt that the polar bear is the largest bear - But James when you say the largest carnivore period - wouldnt that include things like great white sharks & killer whales etc.
Have heard of those p bears becoming the eatin while there hunting there prey.
Those cute orcas weight quite a few tons(heard they love dolphins as snaks too& whales much bigger then themselfs.

So am I to take it that the polar is larger in height and weight than the kodiak?? I may be wrong on this, but I've always thought the kodiak to be heavier than the polar.

There seems to be some disagreement even among the so called experts on this one. On average it is the Polar Bear hands down with an average weight of between 900 and 1500 pounds, the largest ever recorded however was only 2210 pounds. The Brown Bear or Grizzly has an average weight of between 500 and 900 pounds, the largest ever recorded weighed in at 2500+ pounds. So, you decide, and I hope the bet wasn't for any serious money because the answer is pretty ambiguous. See the link. http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/bear.html

Myorcas could still eatim Almost moved to Kodiak island, even had the ferry sevice looked into to ship our truck&us etc & a job- well for my nurse- guess i could have worked in the fish prossing factorys or just hunted & fished a lot[8D]- a boat would have been good i think, for various reasons.

woldnt want to ahve a foot race with a white or brown or black bear or just a spear if i could help it.

I think the largest carnivore would be the Sperm Whale.

I would say, on average, that Polar bears are the largest bear. That's the laws of nature, the furtherest a typical species is away from the equator, the larger it has to be in order to survive (has to do with body surface area in relation to weight). That is why most species of people that live near the equator are generally small and thinner but the Vikings and others nearer the poles are generally larger genetically.
