Default Bear Hunting

Never had any luck at it, but I'm hoping to change that this coming spring. I just seem to run into bears every so often while hunting deer/elk, but things never line up very well for a good shot.

So, looking for methods to employ in the spring. It's illegal to bait in Montana and I have a personal aversion to road hunting. I'd like to hear about effective spot and stalk bear hunting. What has worked for you guys in the past?

I've never really had any great desire to kill a bear even though they are around my property in northern MI on a regular basis. We had warm weather all the way into the latter half of November and this one obviously hadn't denned up yet after the first snow! Judging from the size of his track (about 5"x9") he's a good one.

in the spring I like to get a good vantage point and glass open grassy hillsides, with timbered draws. they like to eat that grass to get their stomachs working again after the big sleep. once you spot , you just have to make a plan and stalk em

Sage, if you can identify and get into elk calving areas you will find bears. During the spring calving season I have seen bears rolling through areas like a hound dog with their noses to the ground. Find an active calving area, and there will bears around. South facing slopes with early thaw off and new green grass in the earlier part of the season..
