The only shot that far in my state would be out over the lake and that would be way out of range for a duck.

That long range stuff just fascinates me.

I've always been an in the woods sit in a tree man. In 2000 I hunted in the Texas hill country and shot two different bucks both at 190 steps on the same crossing down at the bottom of a hill.
Both would have been right close to 200 yards.
It seemed like a mile to me.

I here you C. Davis, but if you have a quality scope, gun & ammo? Watch out! 400 yards is relativity easy, if you practice on a range? Do it Davis

Default Naw, I specialized in the close in shots.

On a busy hunting day, I'd get in a little deeper than the other hunters and wait for their movement back to their vehicles, for lunch on that cold day. I thought it was a good shot to get a deer, moving away from hunters, at 75 to 100 yards.

It was always my ace in the hole. Got pretty good at predicting deer escape routes. Wasn't looking for long shots. Got good at out-waiting others for a mid day shot. My object was getting a deer.

It proved good hunting alone.

My first buck was my farthest shot at ~290 yards measured after the fact. He walked out along the field edge opposite of where I was seated. I excitedly threw my 270 up on my camera tripod and fired. Missed him, but he didn't seem perturbed. I composed myself, took a deep breath, adjusted my aim to account for the distance, and slowly squeezed off a second round that nailed him dead center of the chest.
