Default Wyoming mule deer hunt

I'm looking to finally use my preference points (5+) and plan a hunting trip to Wyoming for mule deer. I plan to hunt unguided on public land. Where is the best area for mule deer buck quantity? Mule deer buck quality? And the best area for public land access?

thanks,

How many actual PPs do you have, as a person has to have full points and your 5+ is throwing me off? Region G is the best spot by far to kill a big buck on vast amounts of public land, but not so much a quantity of bucks. The latter is normally found on private ranches. To do it right in Region G you need to go on a mule or horse, so that might take it out of your thinking, although Yellowstone Horse Rental in Afton is close to the hunt area and prices are reasonable. My buddy and I both killed very nice bucks in the 170s and 180s last September on a high country horseback hunt in G.

Default preference points

I believe I have 8 preference points. Which should be more than enough to get into any region I believe.

8PPs won't get you into some of the individual units that are taking max PPs (max is 10 this year) or close to it, but 8 is certainly up there for a lot of hunts. IMHO as I mentioned earlier, if you have enough PPs like you do, I would put in for Region G where I went last year and you won't regret it. It's fabulous country with plenty of big bucks to be had with some hard work and some luck mixed in. The first picture was taken from the ridge where I shot my buck looking north with the Grand Tetons in the background. I call Wyoming my second home and I haven't missed a season out there since 1999!

How can you discover which units require a certain amount of preference points?

gjersy,
Are you using preference points for your hunt?

For sure! My buddy should draw his resident moose tag and can buy a OTC mule deer tag again such that he already has set up a 15 day combo horseback hunt starting the last week of September. If the moose tag is drawn, the hunt will be on and I'll go along as an extra pair of eyes.
