I use a 7 mag and will take pretty much any high percentage shot that presents itself. I was just relating what I see by hanging around with the dudes around here.
The 243 gets used a lot and with pretty good result.

It doesn't get used a lot. It gets used a little. Like I said, I have never seen anyone using a .243 in 20 years of hunting elk. I('ve heard stories and I even know friends that their kids and wives use them. I have never seen one in all of the hunting camps I have visited or been a part of.

You are shooting the messenger here. I have seen people use 243s on elk. I have never and would never use such a light caliber for this purpose myself. I don't even use it for deer.
