If someone had placed a Rem Model 7 in .308 in my hands when I was a beginning elk hunter I would have looked at it like a gift from Heaven.

30-30 for elk
 

I got my ol Sears 53 (Win 94) 30/30 all set up for elk this fall. Open sights, zeroed to 250y with awesome Hornady Leverevolution ammo. Maybe this is my yr. No heavy rifles, no big scopes. Just me and my Winchester. I should be able to run up and down them hills here. Well if my knees hold up maybe. Good luck w your 30-30 too.

Aint no doubt in my mind, that cartridge will kill an elk if you do your part...Good luck, post pictures if you get one!

with a high grain bullet you could take an elk at 100 yards with a 30/30. just make sure he has a good broadside shot. don't shoot at him straight on comein towards you. I know a guy that has killed over 20 elk all with a .243, so a 30/30 should be fine.

the 30-30 has been used to kill some big black bear. if it will kill one of them it will kill an elk. just make sure that he doesn't take shot out past his comfort zone. try to keep the shots within 100 yards. shooting sticks will help steady the rifle.

The 30-30 will teach him to hunt....He'll have to get close, but isn't that what hunting is really about? My neighbor's 14 year old son killed a whopper bull with a .243 year before last....scored 410 3/8, I believe...the biggest bull killed in Montana in 2012. He crawled to within 50 yards of the bull and killed it with one shot. Having said that, I don't advocate using a .243 for elk....a larger caliber is better, of course...but it goes to show if you get close and chose your shot carefully, caliber isn't all that important. I'd rather see someone get close with a smaller caliber gun than someone blasting away with a big magnum at 600 yards or more, which happens far too often.

Did he put the .243 though both lungs? I have been very impressed with my .243

Usually, it's a bang flop. And most people say the same thing about a .243

The deer I've shot with a 30-30 have dropped like a ton of bricks. Of course, I wasn't shooting long range. I've not shot an elk with my
30-30, but have thought about using it. I would not shoot unless I was within 100 yards and had a broadside shot though.
