I have never attempted to shoot an elk or moose. However, I would only try to do it with a 30-30 if it was all I had and I was starving. The 3006 is much more capable of doing the job right and may save a lot of looking for a wounded animal.

I have a group of friends that hunt the first rifle season with open sight 30-30 and 45-70. They are generally 4-5 out of 6 and have yet to lose one yet that I can remember. They all limit their shots to less than 200 yards so they have to pass on many opportunities. However, you can't argue with their success rate (all public land). It is not my cup or tea, but for them it works great.

It's even more effective if you keep the shots under 100yds.
