30'06 180 grain all the way......JMHO. My son took his first deer with a 7mm mag. however he was 6 ft. tall at 14 and stout to boot. The parent needs to know their child's talents, shooting abilities, and confidence level. In no way would I suggest a 30-30 for Elk!

I'm in awe just in awe.

When I was just a little whipper snapper my daddy made me walk the highway and pick up returnable pop bottles and collect the deposits so he could buy a few 30/30 cartridges and keep us in elk meat. Otherwise the whole family would have had to survive on potatoes and an occasional rabbit.
Not really...... But the old man did kill a bunch of elk with his 30/30, usually with one shot. I killed a few with his rifle too until I started reading Outdoor Life and decided I just couldn't live without a .270. So I robbed a couple gas stations and bought my .270. Not really...... |

Back in the day everyone had either a .30/30 or a .30-06 as their big game rifle. .30/30 lever gun or a .30-06 bolt gun. :patriot: |

I know an old boy who has shot 24 elk with a .243. so yes a 30-30 will do just fine
