just let him use the 30-30,theres alot being read into this.the 30-30 will do just fine,im not sure why everyone thinks elk are a super animal but he will do fine with it just give him the chance instead of putting all these BS but what ifs.let HIM enjoy hs first hunt.

The hunt was six months ago and the kid used the 30-06 he had practiced with and was having no problems shooting. Unfortunately he didn't see a bull to shoot, but he used the better of the two cartridges for elk under the circumstances presented. No doubt the 30-30 under proper conditions would have done the job, but no sense in handicapping the first time hunter with it when he proved he was capable with the 06.

30'06 180 grain all the way......JMHO. My son took his first deer with a 7mm mag. however he was 6 ft. tall at 14 and stout to boot. The parent needs to know their child's talents, shooting abilities, and confidence level. In no way would I suggest a 30-30 for Elk!

I'm in awe just in awe.

When I was just a little whipper snapper my daddy made me walk the highway and pick up returnable pop bottles and collect the deposits so he could buy a few 30/30 cartridges and keep us in elk meat. Otherwise the whole family would have had to survive on potatoes and an occasional rabbit.

Not really......

But the old man did kill a bunch of elk with his 30/30, usually with one shot. I killed a few with his rifle too until I started reading Outdoor Life and decided I just couldn't live without a .270. So I robbed a couple gas stations and bought my .270.

Not really......

Two great stories; both of which are true however......................

Back in the day everyone had either a .30/30 or a .30-06 as their big game rifle.

.30/30 lever gun or a .30-06 bolt gun. :patriot:

Very true, except those oddballs like me who hung on O'Connor's every word and dreamed of mountain sheep and a light weight .270.
I used that 270 on everything !

I know an old boy who has shot 24 elk with a .243. so yes a 30-30 will do just fine
