I would probably plan on either the first 7 days or the
Last 7 days. Plan on spending at least a couple days
Just figuring out where to hunt. Elk are more mobile than
White tails. Don 't hunt until you start seeing Elk or
Very fresh sign. Especially early look for wallows.
Not much rain look for water holes. Get away from
Roads, look for steep nasty places and you'll find
Elk. Good luck.

Yes, you will need to have cow calls and know how to use them. If it were me, I would go the last 7 days.
The best thing you could do right now is go to elknut.com and get his videos on the sounds elk make, why they make them and how to answer back. Well worth the money. No, these are not hunting videos with a little bit of "how to" thrown in. They are 100% how to and why to.

As far as cow calls go. You'll probably want a couple.
So you sound like different cows. You might want to
try a "hochie Mama" call, easy to use. Beware of
calling if the Elk should be able to see the cow and
just like any other calling situation don't over call
can be worst than not calling at all. If your hunting
along and can call then have time to very quietly
move a few yards forward and slightly to one side
so your not right where the Elk are going to be looking
for you that can be helpful. Good luck.

Unit 4 is nearly all private land. There are a couple great state parks, but those are now closed to NRs.
Do you know anything about the ranch you will be hunting? Size and location? I would talk to the landowners and ask them about the best week. Also, how many other hunters will be hunting during each week. If it is just you, then any week should be fine, but if you are with a bus full of other hunters I would come a different week.
