Congrats on the mulie! I' ve removed the velvet from caribou before, and it is alot easier if you do it as soon as possible. The velvet will start to dry to the antler.
You can still peel it off of there, using a knife to lightly cut into the velvet, but be sure not to cut the antler as it will show after you are done. I was able to get the knife under the velvet and on top of the bone, and started prying up and made a cut from the base of the antler to the tip, then peeled the velvet around the circumference of the antler. Once you have a large peice to pull back on, it gets a little easier. The longer you wait though, the more work you' ll have to put into it.
As far as staining, you can look up companies like Rittles taxidermy and find antler stain in various colors. I' ve never applied it before, so I' m not sure how to use it, but I' m sure it isn' t that difficult.
