Wich way of hunting would be more productive - sitting in a tree stand and waiting for a hog to pass by , or stalking , and trying to cach them unsucpecting ?
Would hog calls do any good ?

I like to use dogs, but have a lot of sucess with stalking.
Find their sign then stalk slow and quiet, keep downwind.
Pigs make a lot of noise so aren' t too hard to locate.
Their eyesight is not great, but their hearing and sense of smell are incredibly good.
Where I' ve hunted, the pigs move around a lot so hunting from a stand, wouldn' t work real good. I guess you could stake out a food supply.
A few places I' ve hunted have been on ranchs. When they loose an animal (Cow/sheep etc.) they lay the carcass on the bush edge, when you see evidence of pigs feeding, you can ambush or stake-out.
In places where water is scarce the same could work on waterholes.

I personally never heard of a hog call to call the pigs in with, but have gotten maybe 50 hogs stalking and maybe 10 or 15 from a stand while deer hunting at the same time, but if you are strictly hog hunting then I would suggest the stalk method, their signs are pretty much evident when you come across rootings that look like a bulldozer has been in there and their smell is present, this is when you can expect them around any head/thicket and you better keep the wind in your face, and when you encounter them, do your moveing when their head is down rooting, when the head goes up, then freeze, if its head goes back down, make your move then, but if the head goes up and ears go back and the hair raises on the knapp of its shoulder, you are ASOL, its a blast and you' ll have fun with it. Iam looking foward to this hunt , now iam doing alot of target practice,and i hope that ill get that trophy hog

I have never heard of a hog call, not saying they don' t exist. I like to spot and stalk, though stand hunting is fun too, like most hunting of any type.

I have a few thoughts for first time boar hunters:

1. Use at least .264 caliber cartridge
2. Use a heavy for caliber bullet
3. Use a bullet with controlled exspansion
4. A boars vitals are just a little farther forward than deer and a little higher
5. Boar can take multiple hits from large caliber guns and show little sign of being hit.
6. Think twice about a barrel over 22"
7. Be prepared to make fast and repeated follow up shots
8. Avoid too much magnification on your scope think
9. Think twice about a single shot (i.e. items 5 and 7)
10. Make your first shot count as always

it does not take much for a dog to do the hunting for you. all you do is follow and shoot.i agree with the theory of holes or wallows. if you state allows then you could put out corn.your cover will dictate how you hunt. i use a scoped 7mag when not much cover. when thick cover i use a 45.70
