I am a whitetail guy who wants to get out west to hunt big game but I know nothing about the drawing processes that take place. Do you have to pay the whole license fee and hope to get a tag? Or do you just pay a small amount and if you get picked in the drawing then you pay the big bucks? What state is the best bargain for this process?
Thanks for the help.

New Mexico has a lottery for the elk tags for most units, last year they had 1 (one) unit that just opened up after being closed for a long time and if you applied you got a tag. I'm going to "try" again this year in NM the cost was $756.00 if you didn't get drawn the state took $6.00 and the rest was returned. Some states you can buy over the counter...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Mike-
CO you can set up for draw, pay the full amount plus $3.00, and if you don't get drawn you get the license fee back but not the $3.
There are also, or in the past anyway, over the counter tags for you to pick up. Best bet is to get into a draw area, and if that doesn'lt work out then just a counter tag. That gets you into general public hunting which isn't too bad if your willing to work.
Anyway, look up the CO DOW website, and send them an e-mail, they will gete you on a mail list and set you up.

In utah you dont for the tag until you draw it, you only pay the 5.00 fee and you can put in a application on the internet now and use a Credit card.
It all depends on what kinda hunting your looking at doing..Bow or rifle..rifle tags are harder to get on some units due to more rifle hunters then bowhunters.

Utah used to be first come first served on thier nonresident tags .Then they had some draw only areas . Archery tags never run out or so they told us ,we bought some two weeks before the season started . On the drawing I think Co. is the easiest to draw .LOL
