Anyone ever hunt elk in the BLM land in southern Colorado?
I saw a deal for $5,900.00 for 5 acres of land down in southern Colorado near the Rio Grande River. It is right by the BLM land. I have bought the land and am trying to find out about the hunting on the BLM land. Anyone ever get any Elk down there?

"Southern Colorado near the Rio Grande River" covers a lot of territory. There are some good areas and not so good. As in all real estate: "location, location, location"
In your case it depends on the exact location.
There are plenty of those kind of lots in areas such as the San Luis valley that are a dime a dozen down in the low country. Some good hunting in the not so distant area, but not at your doorstep.

So you do know the area? My land is located between Manassa and San Luis, Colorado in a subdivision called the Rio Grande Ranchos. It borders the east side of the Rio Grande river and then on the other side of the river is BLM land. It is near Hwy 142. Do you know how the hunting is in this area?

Depends on how close you want hunting. I was born in Monte Vista and know most of the area pretty well. If you want hunting at your back door then subdivisions probably won't get you that. There is excellent elk/deer/antelope hunting in the San Luis Valley. Area 80 and 81

No, I didn't buy the property to hunt on it, like I said I just bought the property because it was 5 acres for $5,900.00 and either way for that price I figure it is a good investment. But it is only a mile to the BLM land. I am from Texas and do a lot of hunting here but have always wanted to hunt elk in Colorado. I was told that there is elk that run in this BLM land there so I was wondering if anyone ever hunts in the area. I am not sure where area 80 or 81 is. Can you give me a little more location?

Areas 80 and 81 are directly to the west from Monte Vista. I believe that if you drew a line around what is DelNorte, Monte Vista, Capulin and points west 20 miles or so you would get a good idea.

scroll down to the box and type in GMU 80 or GMU 81 - it will bring up a small map that you can reference against a bigger one
