just went on my first moose in oct. near a town called jelicoe in ontario. i didn't get any shooting, but my father shot a 39 in. bull. my cousin shot a cow. and a friend of mine shot a 40 in. bull. i dont know what the success rate is for moose in canada but 3 moose out of 7 guys i thought was pretty good. considering how cheap it was. im definetly going back. MOOSE HUNTING RULES!!!

Nice goin on the Moose Hunt! I went to NE Alaska in Sept on a self guided Moose hunt/ float trip and never saw anything bigger than a Beaver, but found a tooth to a Wooly Mamoth on a gravel bar while clearing it for the bush plane to land. Thats my trophy!

Moose hunting in canada varies great deal in quality and price.The cheaper hunts almost always offer a much lower success rate or smaller animals or both.Areas such as northern B.C. offer almost 100% success on bulls in the 50" range but they do cost more.Newfoundland also offers very high success rates and the hunts are quite reasonable but the moose are much smaller on average.Places such as ontario have lower success rates and smaller bulls but are quite cheap.

Congrats to your group, 3 moose for 7 folks isn't bad in my eyes.

Diverdog, where did you go in Alaska? Were you up in ANWR? I'm guessing the Koyukuk river just south of the Brooks Range. I've hunted up there before, and only saw a cow and calf. We got way off the river nearly every day as well, tried calling, glassing and everything. That area has been hit pretty hard by both hunters and predation. Glad you had a good time, we found some Mastadon parts on our caribou hunt in north central Alaska this summer.

I guess I'm just cut from a different cloth because where I come from nobody is 100% successful and very rarely does every single person in a hunting party tag out. I don't think I'd even want to go on a hunt where 100% success existed. Thats what brings me back every single year, the challenge and the fact that I could and sometimes do go home empty handed. I played football up to the college level and I wouldn't have made it passed little league if I knew I was going to win every single game. I say 3 out of 7 on a moose hunt is real good hunt in my eyes, I'd just want to go back next year and make it my turn. If it ain't tough, it wain't worth it.

Rather be huntin-The challenge on many hunts is not just tagging out but rather to take the best animal that you can.I have gone on several hunts where I could have easily killed a decent animal but my tag went unfilled because I didn't find the particular animal I wanted.

I say anywhere from 30-50% success rate and moose is a good moose hunt. Sask where I live a successful moose hunt is 2 bulls out of 6. If you get 50% or up you had a hum dinger. However certain areas have more moose, so the success rates will be higher, especially if you just want any moose. SJ, mentioned Northern BC and high success rates on big bulls, these are remote areas that have good populations of moose and low hunting pressure. I have Brother in Law whose sister lives in Fort St. John they shoot a moose each each fall and never take the really huge but 40-45" is the average...again low pressure and good habitat and numbers. He also brought up Newfoundland, not only are these animals land locked(island) but I am positive they have more moose than people leaving their.(sorry Newfie's on the board) I have seen moose everytime and all times of the year I have visited Newfoundland.

While these high success rates may not be for everyone, plenty want to go home with something. I guess it's up to you to decide what ya want, howeever if you are looking for a trophy or particular sized animal than the chances or succes rate will fall in an area.

Sure I agree with that. Sometimes I don't just hunt elk, my tag might as well say &quot;350+ class bull elk&quot; cause I have lots of smaller bulls to my credit and thats what I want to hunt. My point was is when you have 100% success then it takes away a lot of what hunting is, just as you said the challenge. The challenge of getting the animal you want and the fact that it might, and sometimes does elude you is why I keep going back.
