.50 Caliber will work fine. Probably the most popular caliber across the board for any animal. Use a good strong sabot (XTP, Shockwave, etc.) in the 250-300 grain class, or a Conical in the 330++ grain range to whatever your gun manufacturer will allow and will shoot good in your gun. For conicals look at Buffalo Bullets, T/C Maxi Balls, No Excuses, and there are a few others I am not familiar with that should work just fine. I shot my elk in 2005 with a 370 grain T/C Maxi Ball over 80 grains of Pyrodex RS. Killed her just fine.

Tanker,
I have taken several elk with a 50 Cal. I also have a 54 Cal. which is my choice. It might not mean much but the 54 appears to be a bit better for my money. If you haven't bought one yet I would recommend the 54. I have shot bulls out to 125 yards with both. Both have also worked great on deer.

kilotanker19 there are currently some great discussions about ML powder
and bullets going on at the blackpowder section of this forum. You might
want give it a look. I have been learning a great deal myself. I also am
new at this.
