Being 12 yards from that big pissed of 6X6 was pretty intense. One of the most awesome acts of nature I have seen in the woods. Don did a great job calling, and had that bull so livid that I could see it in his eyes. The screaming and chuckling from so close, the rank odor from him since the wind was perfect, the feeling of drawing back thinking, "this is it!", the agony watching him bolt, then the thrill hearing Don call and the bull turn and come back. The overwhelming excitement thinking, "here we go, I'm getting a second chance!", the frustration when he stops with his vitals covered by a small pine tree, the agony when he tromps off again, the thrill when Don stops him and the bull turns to come back, the sheer agony of getting spotted by some little spike bull at 40 yards while I was moving to get into position for the shot when the big bull was headed back in. Man, it's almost too much! What a freekin thrill though, something I will remember forever.

I've had a lot of close seconds, but I think that one tops them all. Shooting a black bear on the ground with a bow at 9 yards was pretty dang cool. That gave me a rush like no other since fear was involved, with an overload of accomplishment when the bear died within 20 yards of me.

Videoing my buddies 12 year old getting his first caribou was great, taking my dad, brother and godfather out and all of them getting their first caribou was awesome also.

Shooting a bull moose at 20 yards with the bow was great, seeing the arrow hit perfect was a sweet feeling. Watching him go down in 40 yards was a thrill.

Taking a lady out on her first bowhunt, even though she wasn't hunting, and I shot a drop tine caribou with her by my side was fun as well. I didn't get the rush like I did with the bear, but she sure was excited!

I guess I have to consider the whole year memorable, not just one moment of it.

My buddies first good whitetail buck. We set up to rattle in this deer and on the second attempt it worked. My buddy put him down with the second shot and instantly began shaking like a leaf, once I told him he put a good hit on him. As we approached he was shaking uncontrolably and jumping. The buck ended up being a 140 class 4x4 and is being mounted today.

His reaction and joy made my season. It took me back to many a hunt and the realization of just how great a sport hunting is.

Now he just has to top that next year...<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>! yeap that was his reaction too when i told him that!

Seein' a big 7x7 bull move his cows across a hill 350 or so yards away. He was zig-zaggin' throught the trees growlin' like a banshee. Some boys dressin' a 5x5 spooked him. I didn't git a shot, but I had a thrill tryin' to foller him in my scope. Had he not run into those fellers, he was headed my way. I ended up callin' a 5x5 that was trailin' the herd over to my hill. But seein' an' hearin' thet big ol' boy made me look forward to next year, when I won't be constrained by time an' can hunt 'im proper.

Opening day, I missed a big ole' buck hopping along twice at about 75 yards, don't know how. After the second shot, he stopped, I took a rest, and the gun wouldn't go off on my model 70 30-06.
He walks away, I take the gun apart, and right when it's in 5 pcs, out steps TWO big bucks at 30 yards, strolled right passed me. Finally nailed a decent buck a couple of hours later after I fixed the gun.
My most memorable hunts are still to come, as I have a lot of time with my father in the late seasons, always a good time, lots of action.

You see Guys(gals?).These stories are what hunting is all about.People who don't hunt sometimes just don't get it.I had a guy at work ask about my Bull hunt.He did'nt care about the story. All he wanted to know was if I &quot;got one&quot;.When I said I did'nt, the conversation was over.He sure was interested when I took a cow(elk that is)early in Nov.Keep the stories comin'and take someone hunting so they to can &quot;GET IT&quot;!!

.30-06, Right you are! Noticed that many of these posts show the memorable effect the hunt had upon those hunting with the author of the post, often friends, parents, and children! Respect and awe for Mother Nature seems to rank high also. Good stuff!
Keep them coming!

Good judgment comes from bad experience! Half of elk hunting is knowing what NOT to do!

Taking 2 of my daughters on their first hunt ever, they both got to watch me take my first elk!! They both got right in there and helped hold the a leg out the way as we gutted and skinned them

Sitting in my ground blind hunting White tail. An evening hunt a small 3x3 comes up to my blind (i mean comes up 5 feet away!!!) Doe piss was work real good that day!! I tell ya first time I ever had to raise my gun in self defense. Good thing i didn't have to shoot him. nothing could top that for me .well maybe if it was a bull elk or old mossy face himself (bull moose)

Hunt for the sport, share the outdoors and most of all be safe and enjoy it......know your
back stop when shooting!!

My most memorable moment: taking my first elk (cow) after months of hard off-season scouting and preparation. Me and a buddy pitched our low-budget camp at the edge of a wilderness area several hundred yards from all the fancy high-dollar outfitter camps. I bet we didn't sleep or eat as well as they did and I guarantee they didn't work as hard as we did (the clients, I mean), but I also know our experience was much more meaningful. We hunted hard, stuck to sound hunting principles and ended up ambushing a herd coming into a park at about 10,500 ft. about a half hour before sundown. They never even knew we were there until I squeezed my one shot off at about 40 yards (of course I didn't have a bull tag, as I could have easily taken the nice 5x5 with the cows). I still can't get the smell of those elk out of my nose as they came up out of the drainage heading right downwind towards us. I also will never forget the sound of those animals crashing thru the timber on there way to have an early evening snack (a whole lot louder than the whitetails and muleys I am used to).

We quickly (but carefully) skinned, dressed and quartered the cow and humped every edible bit of that heavy son of a gun out on our backs over deadfalls through a hard snow pack and thru thick timber in the middle of the night (the most important lesson I learned - do NOT shoot the lead cow - take a smaller and LIGHTER cow!). by the time our work was done, we ate our luke-warm canned stew back at camp at 2:00AM, completely exhausted (food never tasted so good). Every time I look at those ivories, it gives me the chills.
