Default SW CO Elk & Muley info

Does anyone have any info on Elk or Muley hunting in SW Colorado, Specifically around La Jara or Granby(units 81 & 82 I think). Is this a good place to go if you do not have any points. I'm not looking for B&C animals. Just a cow or respectable bull or buck. Thanks in advance.

gchaff,

I hunt units 80&81 in s/w Colorado. And have a cabin within 12 miles of La Jara Resivoir. I'm assuming the question would be what season would be best to hunt that area depending average climate conditions. La Jara Canyon area has produced a vast number of elk kills. Not always monster bulls but a few around, kinda right time right place sort of thing as far as that goes. Early season archery can be great around Red Mountain and Devils Hole. I would move into the San Juan Wilderness for 1st season rifle which is a draw only season. Hansen Creeksouthwest of Platoro has the better chance of shooting a decent bull. Later seasons over the counter tags have more pressure but a good chance of elk moving into where your hunting. I would hunt around California Gulch northwest of La Jara Resivoir.
Deer is all draw and the best time to shoot a big buck is during the muzzleloading season up near the Continental Divide in the San Juan Wilderness near Blue Lake west of Platoro.

Alot of people say you must hunt a quality draw unit to kill big monster animals. Tell that to the 14yr old kid that shot a 397 class bull elk in unit 80 this year. That's an over the counter area that anyone can hunt. Sure quality units hold more bulls approaching 300 class and beyound but it's not always the quality unit that gets the big bull of the year award.

Hope I was helpful feel free to ask more questions.
