Don't waste your money.Your 30-30 should be just fine for stopping a bear. Not that buying a slug gun is a waste of money, but if I was going to buy a slugger I'd buy a rifled barrel.I hunt Indiana alot I have a Savage bolt action & shoot Lightfield sabots & it is really acccurate.

The 30-30 will work fine but if it is a charging bear I think that I would rather have a 1oz slug hitting the bear than a 30-30 bullet. We've all seen deer do amazing things when shot, I wouldn't want to see what a ticked off bear could do.

People don't give the ole saddle gun enough credit. I grew up huntin a mdl 94 and killed plenty of whitetail and bear with it.Problem with slug guns is if you do happen to need to shoot past 100 yds your pretty much SOL. I am guessing from your handle that your in Pennsylvania which means your talking medium sized black bear? Stick with the saddle gun. I think it'll do you right!!

I would stick with the 30-30 as far as how well it will perform. But If you want a little change, there is no big reason to not use a 12ga.
A slug won't stop a bear any faster but it does put a better hurtin' on them than a 30-30 bullet.
