I'm thinking of getting the girlfriend an all around gun from antelope to elk. I'm thinking a stevens 200 in .308 is whatI'mplanning on.But I was wondering how the 300 WSM compares in recoil with the .308? I heard that the short mags have less recoil than there bigbrothers. Ballistically the 300 WSM is better, but if it kicks to hard she won't want to shoot it. I was thinkingon a howa in 300 WSM any other guns on the lower end side chamber the 300 WSM?

Using the same weight rifle andloadings to approximate factoryvelocities for both,I calculated roughly2 lbs more recoil for the 150gr out of a 270win than for the 165gr out of a 308win.Of course this does change depending on the powder used for each.

Do you handload? If so have you considered the 7mm 08 for her? My wife is 5' nothing, small framed and hates my 270 win but has no problems with our friends micro hunter in 7mm 08. Though fit certainly has a lot to do with it, the 7mm 08 is a very nice round to shoot for anybody and as a handloader more than capable for upto moose sized game with the proper bullet selected. 140 tsx comes immediately to mind..!
Of course putting a sims or pachmyarpad on will also help emmensely to felt recoil, as long as the pull doesn't change for her. Again fit is of the utmost importance to shootability.
If your not a handloader then I think your original thought of a .308 win is very sound.
Good luck

My opinion stay with the .308.........
Remember..She is going to be practicing lots with this gun,and a sore shoulder will happen that may result in flinching.....
The .308 is very inheritally accurate cartridge and these helps when shooting long ranges as well even in cheaper designed guns.....
But if your thinking of the .300WSMyou got to think of the gun your buyng the caliber.in.
I don't know what the recoil will be like in a .300WSM people are already mentioning adding recoil padding..
Not to mention the creep, over travel just in your trigger pull.
I think it wouldn't be very pleasant cal to shoot in a cheaply priced and built rifle and it certainly won't shoot as accurate as others on the market.
Terminal ballistics don't mean a thing if you can't hit the target........
Amuch better choice would be the Savage/Rem/Weatherby in a higher grade/models thiswill help reduce the recoil cause the stocks will be better suited to handle the recoil and the barrels will be made of better steel.Overall you get a finer tuned in gun that will be alot more pleasant to shoot..
I wouldn't settle if all you can afford is a Stevens, maybe look for something alot better second hand...
They are out there..

In rifles of the same weight, the 308win will produce less recoil shooting a 165gr bullet than a 270win shooting a 150gr bullet. The 270wsm will produce noticeably more recoil than either of the other two.
Did you consider the .270 win or .270 wsm. If she is comfortable shooting it, the .270 has enough horsepower for elk sized game. I would prefer shooting a lighter cartrige more accuratly than a bigger bullet with significant recoil....

Let me add this, I shoot a 300wsm and with the Sims recoil pad it not bad. However, the price of ammo is much higher than the 308. If that doesn't matter to you, I love my wsm.
