This is proving to be interesting. Mostly I am surprised that the various .300 magnums aren't represented more. With all the posts I read about people hunting whitetail deer with .300 mags I would have thought it to almost be the minimum for elk. Don't hunt elk never have but that's only because I live on the wrong size of the continent. We do have moose though and I have found that those big buggers aren't hard to kill. Kinda like shooting a log skidder in the tire, punch a hole and watch it deflate. But the day is coming when I do the elk thing, yup its coming.

I'm thinking this sight has lost a lot of its elk hunters as a year ago it only took three days to get 30 elk hunters. This year took forever. For the most part this is a whitetail bowhunting site, even so....
It is interesting, a different make up from a year ago, though heavy duty nonetheless. Regarding your observation I think many folks have the 30-06 equivalent and then due to cartridge spacing, they may "jump over" the 300 mags to the various 338s and up. Then after hunting elk and finding out that magnums are NOT the "boogie man" they are made out to be, they conclude, "boy, these bigger ones justanchor themmuch better--- just a better over all result, so the bigger onebecomes their current favorite. Certainly nothing wrong with the 300 Magnums though.

I understand what you are saying about jumping up past .30 cal. I and the group of guys I have hunted moose my whole life with all jumped from the 06 up to .388 mags and used them with great success on the big swamp donkeys. I was the first to drop down to a 7mm rem mag 2 years ago and since then another has done the same and honestly I'm surprised at how effective the little 7 mag is. I don't miss my .338 but then again moose don't tend to run when hit and even if they did we hunt vast areas where the fear of another group tagging our moose is just not an issue. I need to start planning an elk hunt within the next 5 years, its just too inviting !!!!!!!!
