RE: Poll: Elk Cartridge Preferences
Like someone else said, I am a little suprised at the lack of use of the 300 Wim Mag. I would have thought it would be near the top. I am not suprised to see the old stand-by at the top though.

RE: Poll: Elk Cartridge Preferences
The 2 ol non mag standbys are doing pretty darn well. I have never got to elk hunt yet but its coming one of these days. I imagine I will be taking a 270 or a 7-08. Intresting results. EKM, I dont mean to start an argument but I am just curious here as to why the 06 minimum? The 270, 280 and the various 7's should hve plenty of muscle.....again just wondering. Im sure you have a good reason.

RE: Poll: Elk Cartridge Preferences
Experience vs. theory.
Before the camp minimum.... bad things.
After the camp minimum.... it's been super.
[As a point of clarification, I consider the 7mmRemMag to be equivalent to the 30-06.]
If the rest of the numbers (88% for 30-06 and up on the power scale) don't tell a story for you then my explaining isnot likely to help.
It's your money, your time, your hunt, your choice.... go for it.
IMHO, borrow an '06 if you don't own one by the time you decide to apply for tags.

IMHO....I would recommend a sharp stick! Here is my logic.....
More game has been killed with it than any other.
It doesn't weigh very much.
It is readily available.
Very little recoil. (Provided you throw it. If you stab him with it you could get a little reverb)
As long as you limit yourself to the range you are comfortable with(i.e. don't try to stab him from a range longer than your stick)and use proper point placement, you will be satisfied with the results!!!
Just remember to get comfortable with your stick and practice sufficiently to acquire the proper confidence.
As an added bonus, when you realize that you have spent all this money, time and effort on what could havebeen an outstanding hunt, perhaps even the hunt of a lifetime, but yet had to pass up your shot due to the fact that you un-necessarily handicapped yourself by trying to use the least amount of force possible............
you can use your stick to actually do a field study as to whether that realization at that particular point in time is any more painful than a sharp stick in the eye!!!

That was really informational...thanks
BTW No need for me to borrow anything I have 2 06's and a 7 mag.....I just fail to see the orgasmic difference in 200 fps with the same bullets. Sorry to bother you...if i didnt know i wouldnt have asked. My mistake...

RE: Poll: Elk Cartridge Preferences
DD,
IMO you are looking for a paper and ballistics answer to what is essentially an experience question.
If you wish to intentionally "sand bag" your hunt, then that is certainly your perogative.
Go ahead and take one of yourlower performers and leavethe "orgasmic stuff"at home.
Go do the hunt, then you will have experience vs. theory, instead ofvice versa.
Once out in elk country, methinks you may find a change of heart.
With deer practically any old thing will work.
With elk, every little bit helps.
This kind of "chase your tail" ballistics and paper discussion is why the poll asks for "current favorite that you have actually used to take elk" --- experience not theory. Actions speak louder than words. 12% vs. 88%. Your call.
