EKM started this post with the ? current favorite elk cartridge that you personally have actually used to take elk?

To me It looks to come out darn close to what I see I the field. I am a supporter of the 270, but my favorite is not the 270 and I did not say it was my favorite.
this post is good information for first time Elk hunters to see, no matter what you feel is the best cal. for elk is.

Good job EKM

I have taken Elk with, first a Browning A-bolt Medalion w/boss sweet to shoot .300 win, second a Browning stainless Abolt, and third with my own rifle a .300 ultra in a Sako 75 SS. The .300 ultra is my favorite, one shot from 30 yds broadside knocked the big 340 6X6 down the mountain! Look forward to getting a long shot. I hunt in the shadow of the Grand Teton in Idaho. Been hunting for 16 years.

I've never been for elk, but I personally would start at 30-06 and up. 300 Mag should be ideal, I think. Especially for long shots. my vote for 300 mag.

Since i havent hunted elk with a rifle for years I have to think back a little.
I have killed elk with a 270 but it wouldnt top my list, the last 2 bulls one I took with the 338 win mag and the other one with a marlin 45-70 in thick timber. I really like the marlin for shots 100 yards or less and its so much lighter to carry.

I'll take G5 Montec broadhead sitting on a good graphite shaft propelled by a 70# bow anyday over a rifle ..but if I had to go back to rifle hunting my .06 kills just fine and doesn't waste as much meat as one of those macho magnums.
