All I know is that its a very harsh environment and their population has been greatly reduced by hunting and livestock related deseases. I assume therer is a drawing for their tags everyyear. But its mostly for the rich and famous. I am sure you can find more info on the net.

I went to a hunting seminar in San Diego last month and the spokesman had some statistics on the sheep population:
Mountain Lions in San Bernadino County alone over the last 10 years have growen from an estimated 1,600 to 6,000 cats. All while our sheep population is estimated to be down around 200 from 2,000!
There is currently talk going on about opening some tags for big cats in the next year or two. There is a deffinate population inbalance and safety situation here.

For whatever reason, I'm highly doubting it was the hunting that has caused such a population crash.

They're population has been affected due to the state not regulating the cat population...similar to the problem with the wolves in Yellowstone..it's total BS!!![:@]
