Hunters,
How many of you have shot the wrong caribou?
Recently I returned from a moose and caribou hunt. The day we flew in I hiked around the area and discovered a herd about a mile from camp. There was a nice bull in the herd.
The following day I hiked back to the area and discovered the herd was gone. I wasn't surprised. On a hunch I decided to check the other side of the hill. Not only were they there, they were coming my way. I got into a good sitting position. They disapeared for a few minutes and emerged about 200 yards away. At the shot the caribou stepped out of line. The others stopped because they appeared not to know from where the shot came. Then I noticed the one I was thinking about was not the one I shot. I guess I was distracted by the width and the backward points on the one I shot. Its spread is 43" and the antlers look somewhat like an elk's. I was in an area where you only get one. Maybe next time.
