I am going on my first Elk Hunt in Colorado this year and want to know if my Thompson Center Encore .308 Heavy Barrel will do the job? I really like my .308 and shoot it well. I am excited about using it and hope it will perform. What load would you suggest? I was looking at either the Federal 180 grain High Energy round, or the Hornady 165g Light Magnum......

My wife used 308 Win with the 180 grain HE, first couple of years with great success. Two years ago we couldn't find the HE anywhere in town and went hunting anyway, shehit an elk twice at 180-200 with good placement and couldn't drop it. Now she shoots 7mm mag for elk!
Make sure you get the big bullets.

Let's hear it again for Federal 180 grain Nosler Partition HE. I use the same round in my 30-06...however for closer brush hunting I use regular 180...not high energy. Your 308 will be fine. I sometimes carry a 30-30.
