Not sure if your deer hunting involves much long range shooting but if it does I would say 7mm rem mag as first choice and .3006 as second choice. The 7 shoots a bit flatter but the rifle will be a little longer and heavier to carry. Splitting hairs really. I use a 7mm rem mag myself for game up to moose.

OK, after being on this site for just a short while, I was VERY apprehensive about buying a 300 mag because of the the posts regarding concerns with recoil. Well I was quite hesitant, I bought one anyway. In the past few weeks I have put over 100 rounds through my Rem 700 SPS 300 Win and have found that it has no more recoil than my shotgun when I shoot 3 inch loads. Frankly, I have been much more sore after I have shot 25 rounds of trap than I have been shooting 15-20 through the 300 mag. It is quite loud and I wouldn't encourage shooting it without hearing protection. Am I just not sensitive (I know, I have heard it from my wife before) or is there too much hype about the recoil of the 300 mag???

Its' recoil is quite moderate, even light to some.
Better, given elk are on the menu, would be the 30-06 or 7mmRem.Magnum. Depending on the rifle, recoil is again moderate, not much different between these two in the rifles I've shot.
All three of these cartridges are available in left handed models from most major manufacturers. I think Savage probably has more LH rifles available than others.

That's not to say that there aren't a number of other cartridges that will also work but the 30-06 has more factory loadings available of any cartridge, it is about as inexpensive a big game cartridge there is to shoot, ammunition is available anywhere in the world, every rifle manufacturer chambers multiple rifle models for the 30-06.
All the reasons I listed above is exactly the reason I bought my son a 30-06 for his first "real" rifle. He too will need to use it for southern whitetails to big Colorado elk.

Yet another vote for the 7mm Mag. IMO the best all around magnum on the planet for what you are looking for.... knockdown power, 100's of factory loads, not alot of kick for a magnum (buy a good butt pad anyway) and it's flat. Shoot a 160 gr bullet at everything and call it good.

My feelings exactly. A good friend of mine who has to many rifles to count has settled in on the Browning A Bolt 280 with a Shepard scope. Very nice hunting combo for NA.
