As for information on the tags I suggest you try the DOW's website. Or call the local DOW's office in Durango 970-247-0855. As far as the elk, it is still pretty warm here, the elk are high-- mostly at timberline. They are in full rut now, they are really bugling. The feed down low is almost nill because of the drought. I would hunt high. Good luck !!

I'm also a non resident and this will be my seventh campaign in Colorado for elk. I drew a bull tag for first season and just yesterday, 21 Sept. got my "drought" cowtag in the mail. I had only applied a week earlier when I discovered on the DOW website that tags were available. I'll be north of Pagosa Springs in unit 68. The last time that it was close to being this dry was in '98, but not nearly as bad. The animals we got were all high (above 11,700 feet) with the herds scattered. I also would expect them to be high and scattered, and hope for a second estrus cycle.
