Congrats j76 on your new hunting ground! I hope you get to bust a cap on one! We know you can do it! So lets see if you can get r done! You the captain and we are following you around.. LOL Just funning with yah! Good luck bud!
Good luck to you as well DTC! The team is routing for you to get r done.. Good Luck to all our team members going out and trying to bust a cap on one! Also good luck to all of us when our season opens up! I hope jrbsr can get his truck back up and going so that he may get a chance to try and bust a cap on one as well.. Me, I am waiting still for my season to open up. All those birds I have been seeing are just waiting for a couple of caps to get busted on a couple of them. You see I love it when you see those birds doing the strutting. I love it when they start in a gobbling and then come a running with the head just bobbing. I love it like that so I can blast a cap right on top the noggin.. I also must admit I love the idea we can win this tourney. We have a super team to get it done.. So those still hunting Good Luck! The rest of us will have to wait it out until we can get our turn up to bat.. By the way the company I work for will be keeping a few hunters busy as they are having a shutdown for about a week and a half. They are all asking me how did I get a vacation then. I just looked at them and smiled and said I put in for way back when? I have been planning on this hunting week back in Janurary!! I also am hoping to get r done! |
Well boys, hate to break this to ya, but turns out your captain is a complete FREAKIN IDIOT!!!!!!!:bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::bash::b ash:
This new spot is really different for me, its all thick swamp, can't beleive it even holds turkeys. Anyway i work my way down the trails all the way to the back of the prop, bumped a couple hens and seen a little sign. At the back is a nice little food plot with a ton of tracks and strut marks. So i get a plan together for a morning hunt and start back out, figure if i get out of there i'll still have time to hit my other spot and see if the birds came back. I wrap around the trails, get 3/4 of the way back to the truck and 60 yrds ahaed out jumps a bird onto the trail, tom! I dive off to the side and get behind an oak, not sure if he seen me or not i hit the call. After a sec i hear him off in the thick stuff to my left kinda puttin, but a weird sound i dont think i've ever heard one make, but its close and not leavin, so i call again. After a minute or so, i look back up the trail where i first seen him and just off the side next to a little pine i think i see him! He's just standing there lookin my direction. I'm all scrunched up against this tree sitting on my legs, and its startin to really get uncomfortable but i'm locked in a stare down with this thing. After 5 min or so i'm dyin!! It still wont move! I decide since its in range, i'll slowly try to get the gun up, then it will move and i'll be sure that is is infact him at least. I ease the gun up, it don't move, lean my head out, it don't move. You gotta be frickin kiddin me!!! I just spent all this time in a stare down with a stick and a clump of grass! YOU IDIOT!!! I get back on my feet, can't feel anything from the knees down, stagger like a drunk forward about 10 yards and about 80 yrds up the trail......big tom!!! Oh my god! this is killin me!! Back down i go on the other side of the trail and sit right down on my butt. Yelp on the call, nuthin so i really let him have it and make some god awful noises that a pot call aint even supposed to make and bam! he gobbles! Spins around and he's comin down the trail! Its about this time i realize the gun is on the ground next to me and the only thing other than air between my 225 lb butt and the bird is the Charlie Brown Christmas tree i chose to hide behind. Oh this is not good! He's still quite a ways down the trail so i figure any movin i'm gonna do i better do it now. I ease the gun up to my shoulder, but the way i'm sittin for some reason i can't get my hand all the way out onto the forearm. So right hand is on the trigger and left hand is just up from it on the receiver. 870 12 ga witha 28" barrel, she's a bit end heavey holdin it like this! He's comin down the trail, but coverin about 6 inches a minute. He gets to about 60 yrds and i notice something else along side him as he rounds the corner, its a second tom! 10 yrds behind him. Safety is off, between excitement and pain my whole body is shakin. He's about 10 yrds from where i want him and he stops. Gobbles and is lookin hard for the hen. Doesn't move, i can't stay like this any more! He's not as close as i want him, but i'm sure i can make the shot. I can't take it any more! lean out a bit and touch it off BOOM! He spins around and hauls ass down the trail...... I MISSED!!!! I've never flat out missed a turkey befor, i still can't beleive it! Paced it off and it was 46 yrds. Too far i know, but i can and have made that shot! He was a good one too, man am i ticked at myself!!!! Sorry for the long read guys, and for lettin ya down. Plus side is i think there is a bunch of birds there still and made it over to my other spot just befor dark and they were back, roostin where they were on monday. So i'm not givin up, think i've still got a good chance to get it done in the next couple days. |

Got this bird killed on my wife's grandma's farm this morning. I got into the spot they have pitched down to the 2 mornings I have hunted it. So I got on that flat and got set up. The birds go to gobbling and they are in the other hollar. I am ticked!! I think about getting up to move but I know those birds really like this spot. So I am gonna wait it out. Suddenly I hear spitting and drumming. I get to looking and I am sitting under a hen and the gobbler is up the ridge from me. This bird never gobbles but struts for 45 min on the limb. It was getting good and light and the hen above me gives a tree yelp and when she does the gobbler pitches right in front of me 35 yards. Boom, tagged out. 20 1/2 lbs, 10 3/4" beard, and 1" spurs.

Way to go DTC! Another fine bird! Congrats
Well befor everything went to crap on me yesterday, I found that little food plot in the back of the property with all the tracks and strut marks. The trail leading into it is all nice soft sand and the tracks show up great in it. So when I left that area at about 6 last nite, I kicked the Sand over all the tracks. Went back out there about 9 this morn and the trail is full of fresh tracks and poop. Really looks to me like they are hitting that food plot first thing in the morning. Feeling pretty good about being there at daybreak tomorrow. Now if I can just hit what I'm aimin at!!! Other thing I'm likin about that is they have been seeing them way up at the front of the property first thing in the morning also. So I'm really thinking there are two diff groups of birds out there. |
j76 come on now.. RELAX! the waiting game can surely be the hardest part of the hunt. But it is something that is very much needed. So set back and relax. Actually I shoot my birds most of the time near water. A decent opening for them to strut in is all they need. Check for sigh around any area like that and sooner or later you will hit there hide out.. But, just relax and take a deep breath for a little bit. Then think the situation over. Then get right back in there a get a bird..
j76 I hope you do not get offended as I am only messing with you. No harm intended.. All any of us really want is for each of us to enjoy the hunt and share thier stories with us.. Congrats DTC on showing how to get it done! Nice bird by the way too! Congrats as well on playing the waiting game for them to show themselves.. Good story as well. |
I come up with a score of 62 on that bird DTC. Congrats again!

Nice job DTC.
j76 you will get another chance to bust a cap on one. And that was one of the funniest hunting stories I have every heard. Phil your turn is almost here. Anyone else hunting? John |
