RE: Team 7 "Jelly Heads"

Guys, it looks like I'll be delaying my trip to Florida for at least a week. Myhuntin' buddygot sick late last night so we decided to see where we stood in a few days. This may be a blessing in disguise as hopefully the crowds will be a little less as the season progresses.

On another note...I was scoutingon the property that I'll be hunting this year and I came across an absolute monster of a turkey. This thing has a beard that is definitely longer than the tom I got last year. Thickest beard I've ever seen on a turkey. And long too! I haven't gotten a good luck at his hooks but I'm guessing that they're respectable as well.

I'm guessing that this could be the bird that I was trying to squeeze in last year on closing day and couldn't seal the deal before shooting hour closed and ended the season. I went this afternoon on a little snooping mission and saw one tom and a hen. The others weren't there.I'm guessing they were in the woods that were near. Anyway, I can't wait until the season starts here. Good luck guys!

Again, I'll be onlinefor a few more days so if/when y'all get a bird let me know! Simp

Simp, sorry your hunt is delayed. I'm going out Saturday to listen for gobbles. Haven't been hearing them, so hopefully Sat. is the day.

I heading out in just over 5 hrs. Wish me luck. Primarily I am calling for the landowner. If given a chance at two birds, I'll get to shoot too. We'll see...

Sorry about the delay Simp. You'll make it! My daddy always said that if I was tired of waiting, I should just wait faster. So, Simp, ...wait faster!

Nice bird Zach! We need a few like this for the contest. I took my son with me this morning to put another peice of the puzzle together in trying to pattern these birds and at flydown there were 3 tomsgobbling that I saw and at least 1 more, maybe two, that I couldn't see that was gobbling. They put on quite a show!

I'll be there tonight at fly up and again in the morning at fly down to see if I can figure them out just a little more. Again, nice bird! Simp

RE: Team 7 "Jelly Heads"

Well, I called one in for the landowner today. Now that means I can add one for the team. I always try to help him first, since he is so gracious to let me come out to his place. He's 75 years old and couldn't hear one without some help. He's a saint in our church, a blessing to our community, and hero of mine.

The hunt went like this:
1.) Set up: B-mobile, she-mobile, and three more hens
2.) hoot....nothing
3.) hoot again.....nothing
4.) tree yelp....nothing
5.)Fly down cackle....nothing
6.) Yelp--- Thundering Gobble.
7.) Yelp again....Gobble
8.) wait
9.)Yelp....Gobble
10.) Wait--- Hen yelps
11.) Yelp--- Gobble
12.) I see a jake 250 yards down the field
13.) takes him 5-10 min to cautiously come in
14.) 2 more jakes come out.
15.) They start to leave.... I yelp---ABOUT FACE/FORWARD MARCH
16.) They scratch the chufas for 15 minutes.
17.) They stretch up looking to our left
18.) I hear the spit and drum
19.) Gobbler in full strut runs from my left to B-mobile, knocks him down, and then commences to raping that poor decoy. We had to kill that bird.

By the way, I got the whole thing on video.

Now it's my turn!

went out looking for shed this afternoon but found nothing and saw nothing. I did see a few scratchings in the woods. And I wanled around onf our small 1/2 acre fields and found 16 tail feathers, i dint know what they came from but they were not there a few days ago. Also my grandpa has seen 13 birds in different spots around the area the past few days!

Great job Arjuna. I know that made you feel good calling that bird in for him, and I bet he really appreciated it. Now go get your own bird. I finally heard gobbles this morning. Heard two different gobblers. Man was I glad to hear that beautiful sound.

RE: Team 7 "Jelly Heads"

Well, I'm back. I saw two other hunters....didn't know they'd be there. They were the land owners' sons. They usually don't call in to let their daddies know when they'll be there, but that's family privillege. I moved to another spot as they took my honey hole. I never heard a shot, so maybe they didn't do any good either. Well, time to get ready for church. I didn't see a thing. God bless and happy hunting.

This is my Tom from 07.I called him and another gobbler off of the privet property to the right, I was intheir roosting area. This hunt took about30 min, he would answer me then walk off so I moved about 25 yards closer andcalled moreaggressive. He and the other gobbler came in fast after that, killed em about 20 feet inside national forest!

Beard is 7 1/2 inches. It was a great hunt, I almost hate to get a bird as that signals the End of the season in Colorado for me, and a long wait tell next year!

21 lbs

Go get one for the team Arjuna!

Nice bird.

I went this afternoon for a while on some private property. I saw three longbeards driving in and then one popped out in the field while I was setting up. I waited 2 more hours... nothing. I'll get him.

I agree with Arjuna. "They" say that the Eastern is the toughest bird to hunt. I also hear that Osceola isa tough bird.

Spoke with my dad tonight and he said the birds are gobbling good in Southern Indiana. He is about 200 miles south of me though. It just won't warm up where I'm at. Old man winter is not giving up without a fight.

I'm going toTennessee for the opener next weekend and back again the following weekend. The weather is finally starting to settle down some, so maybe the gobblers will be hot pretty soon. Anyone having any luck?Anyone seeing and hearing many birds?

Sorry to say, but the first two days of my season were disappointing. The gobbler I'm after gobbled good Friday morning, unfortunately he wasn't on my property. There were at least two other hunters on the lease next to my land calling at him. He is a very smart bird, so I wasn't too concerned about these guys getting him. The thing that irritated the hell out of mewas that one of the hunters drove his truck right down the middle of the powerline Friday morning, afternoon, and Sat. morning and parked where every turkey in the country would see his truck. Needless to say, the old bird never made a peep today. That's fine though, I'm off all next week and the gobbler and his buddy will eventually come back on my property. That's turkey hunting though.

It's been pretty tough since Friday down here. At least four other hunters are hunting the same birds I am hunting. The birds, only two of them, are henned up bad. That, plus being pressured by other hunters, is making them tough to kill. If they will ever come back to my property, I can really work them. I just really need to be patient. They will eventually show up again.I'm Tennesee bound for the next two weekends. Good luck everyone. We'll be on the board soon.
