Default RE: Teach me about the .444

The .444 is kind of an oddball. It is essentially a souped-up .44 Magnum, in that it uses a rifling twist that is too slow to stabilize long heavy bullets. Consequently, it is limited to shooting what amounts to a pistol bullet, albeit at much higher velocities. The result is, if you use factory ammo, you have a bullet that is too frangible for the velocities the .444 case produces. This means you can't depend on it for deep penetration on heavy game, making the .444 essentially a deer-black bear round. If you could get one with a faster twist, and shoot heavily-constructed bullets of over 300 grains weight, it would be about the same as Teddy Roosevelt's favorite, the .405 Winchesteer. As it is, I would definitely recommend you get a .45/70 instead, which is a lot more versatile than the .444!!

Keep yore powder dry!!
