Default RE: The Antelope Rut

If the season opens in Mid September you should be right in the rut. They are a blast to hunt. The water hole method works well but bring a good book and watch out for rattlers. We have been able to decoy antelope a few times but have spent most of the time hunting elk as their rut happens the same time of the year. So in other words the decoying works best in the rut with some calling. The good setup areas are close to fence crossings. If you find a good area and want to train the goats. You can twist two strands of fence together or prop the bottom strand up to get them crossing there. For some reason antelope are atracted to power lines. I don't know if it is the buzz in the lines or because of the straightness. They are a very interesting animal. Probably the worst way to hunt them is the spot and stalk with a bow. Those buggers can see darn well. One year I made a trojan cow and was able to get fairly close to them but never did get a shot. Make a note, if you build the cow indoors make sure you figure your exit plan. I had to take my apart to get it out of my living room. Good luck.
