The NEF 12 ga slug can kick like an angry mule but I highly douht that a .243 will kick very hard. Keep in mind that the handi-rifle is a very light gun an is inherently going to kick a little bit more than a bench rest gun that weights 10 pounds or more. If you're worried go with a bull barrel. It's heavier but the recoil beast will be tamed.
