I do use my crates everytime we go anywhere and I never let them ride freely in the back of the truck. to the crates provide a shelter from the sun, rain and snow and they can't jump out in case they see a cat rabbit, cat, dog or other animals that might entice them. I just don't have to keep looking over my shoulder to see if they are still there.
