RE: Mountain lions, in PA or NY?
bearklr -
I think that you may have taken what I posted the wrong way. I am not saying that the absolute last Mt lion in NY was killed in the 1800's.
What i am saying is that the last reported kill was in the late 1800's - That is not to say there wasn't more out there. It is just no one as actually killed one and reported it to any type of authority since then. There have been none that anyone knows about found dead and none hit by a vehicle anywhere in the state to actually document that there are any still here.

You asked where I work -
I am a wildlife consultant and I work with a few colleges throughout the state. I do most of my work in the Adirondaks at Paul Smiths College - with the Environmental Science Program, also I have worked with SUNY ESF, Fingerlakes Community College, and I have worked in many projects with NYSFWS and the NYSDEC.
I would also like to clear up something I posted earlier.
quote:
There is belived to be a number of free roaming Mt. Lions in NY all over the state
This makes it sound like there are cougars runnning all over the state - by a number I mean small numbers like maybe 15-20 in the whole state and that is being pretty generous with the numbers. I am thinking more aloong the lines of 10-12.
CharlieP - you are also right, I could be just anyone under another username or some Joe Yahoo off the street or some loony in the nut house for all anyone knows, but there is no one making you belive any of this either. Belive what you want i am just giving you my input. I hope I am able to shed a little light on the subject and as I said earlier i will post some documentation on the coyote issue.
There are alot of fallisies concerning this topic and I hate to see people running around spreading half the truth to everyone they see. All that leads to is a bunch of people thinking that they know the real truth and everyone else is wrong.
