RE: Best time to start scouting for turkeys
Listening for early morning gobbles is the best way to scout IMO. I listen for them to gobble on their own, and will use an owl and crow call too. As I'm walking old logging roads and field edges first thing in the a.m., I'm also constantly on the lookout for tracks, droppings, dusting areas, etc. There is nothing like hearing him gobble though....and it gives you a good idea of where he likes to roost, which is key.
