RE: Camo Scopes
Doug no offense to anyone here, and by no means do I hold anything against any turkey hunter who scopes there gun!I'm all for if it gives you more confidence in what your doing than you'll hunt harder for it!Do I believe scopes are a necessity for todays turkey gun, personally no I dont. Now dont get me wrong in your situation I do beleive it is the way to go.Low light conditions in the early morning hours coupled with bad eyesight,a scope may be the ticket for a much clearer shot.Jay Langston one of Turkey & Turkey Huntings editors recently wrote an article dealing with turkeygun scopes that was quite interesting in that a survey taken by the NWTF revealed that the median age for male turkey hunters was 46 and at least 90% of males older than 40 need some type of vision correction. So with this in mind no question for many such as yourself a scope may help improve your ability to center your target much easier! Now for the rest of us who aren't vision impaired I do not see the need for a scope on my turkey gun.I've owned 3 over alot of years turkey hunting and I've missed a gobbler a time or two and I can assure you it was not the guns fault but "yours truly"!Simply put I misjudged the distance!I hear all the time a scope will center your pattern everytime, but I never had any trouble with all 3 guns I owned hitting the center of the target on paper or in the field. We can go round and round about why one would scope his gun but in my opinion the real reason lies in the fact hunters are continually looking for ways to extend the killing range of their firearm.I remember not all that long ago the standard was around the 30 to 35 yard mark that hunters safely harvested there birds, but obviously with modern day chokes, scopes, and loads that standard has risen.I hear 45,50 and alot greater distances now that hunters wouldn't hesitate to shoot a gobbler. If thats what you want than more power to you,but for myself call me old fashion but I still like to fool an old woodwise gobbler in close.Year after year I see the evolution of our scatter guns turning more like rifles! Its amazing to me those who put so much emphasis on tighter patterns at incredible downrange distances yet look down on those that hunt them with rifles.I just wonder how much longer it will be till the scatter gun will be able to reach out and touch ole gobbler at a 100 yards!Sure would solve alot of those tough field and pasture gobbler problems! I'll stick to the challenge of huntin ole gobbler and callin in him close instead of how far my gun can shoot cause thats the high for me!Bob
