Have you thought of a single shot rifle like a Ruger No. 1, or Thompson Encore. The Ruger No. 1 comes with a 26" barrel, and the T/C comes with a 24" barrel in 30.06 Sprg.
The T/C qualifies as an ambidexterous gun, the Ruger No. 1 doesn't, try loadin' one with a low mounted scope, left handed, you'll get the idea.
