Default RE: Building a new 300 RUM

mossy33oak, your probably right that it is easier to just go out and buy a 300 RUM, but this is more of a do it cause it's fun project as opposed to it being my only rifle. Like I said, I have some spare parts laying around, including a browns precision stock that this "new" rifle is going to sit on, and a VXIII scope, and the barrel is only costing me $30 bucks. So depending on what and if any smith work is needed, I may be able to get away with a "new" 300 for around $100 bucks.

Anyways, thanks for the info all. A couple more questions. stubblejumper, you said that a ultramag magazine insert will be needed, but do you think that the original 8mm mag magazine will not hold the 300 RUM bullets?

bigcountry, you stated that you would also recrown. Why? Like I said, with a quality stock, scope, receiver and trigger already in my possession, I am hoping to get away with this for as little as possible, so going out and spending 200 - 300 dollars on a barrel is kind of defeating the purpose.

I am not looking to build a match competition rifle, but I would like to get MOA groups out to 400 - 500 yards. Some may say that that is wishful thinking, but I already have a sendero in 7STW that will shoot that way, and as far as I know, other than a HS precision stock, the sendero is all built in house at remington so hopefully I can get the same sort of performance out of a factory remington barrel.

Thanks for the info all.
