I like to be at 14+ feet. I've killed a few deer at 10', but cover is necessary. I used to go up to 25' when I used a compound. Now I'm using a recurve and like to stay lower.
I have a friend that killed a 13 pt this year in Ohio. He shoots a longbow that's 64" long. He could almost lean his bow against his stand. It was less than 7' off the ground. He shot the buck at 12 yards. It's not the first time he's killed a deer from that tree at that height. Goes to show you that cover and scent are pretty darn important.
