I've never used a pendulum sight, but I'm pretty sure they work both on the ground and in the trees.

I'm not really sure why a pendulum is better for trees (someone please chime in here). I've always had great luck with my fixed sight and there seemed to be less to go wrong. I guess it may be a factor of how much you practice out of trees.
